Hi Shalisha,

I didn’t even know that you could buy saddles on ebay or Craigslist. I would imagine that I wouldn’t trust buying something so crucial to riding on either of those sites. I have to admit, I haven’t shopped on Ebay in a while, nor list just because some of the items I buy on either are not guaranteed and are often more expensive than if I bought them locally.

It’s the same with Amazon. I stopped buying certain items from there since I have found that in some cases it can be more expensive rather than looking here.

I have used Ebay quite a few times in my life with only one negative experience. I think it can be great for buying certain things, especially unique things, but you do definitely have to be careful, and I would never ever buy something this specialized or expensive on Ebay. Great advice. I’ve seen some nice-looking saddles on eBay, along with some great prices, but I do question the quality, and that’s why I’ve never purchased a saddle online.

Craigslist is a little better, as you can actually meet to see what you are buying, but even then, you can get duped after buying and getting it home you notice the flaws in it. By that time, it’s too late, as there are no warranties.

I’m with you in that the best place to buy a saddle is from a reputable dealer. It’s always nice to be given a recommendation for one; thanks.

Your tips about ebay and craigs’list seems applicable to all products, by the look of it? I am not familiar with either one, so thanks for the warning!

As far as horses are concerned, I am more about looking at them and admiring their movements, than riding them. I have done it a few times. Even took lessons. But the last instructor I had wasn’t very good and the horse certainly didn’t like me, as he threw me off. Ouch. 😀

Buying from eBay and Craigslist is super challenging and if you don’t know what you are looking for in a seller you could end up losing your money. Although I do not buy saddles this could apply to just about anything that you are looking to buy. I recently bought an item from eBay and it was unsafe to be used. I asked for my money back and only got half of it. Then they wanted me to change my feedback to show positive. Overall this is a great topic!

No horses in our area growing up, but we had cows and carabaos and we had free rides! Reading this article made me wish that we had saddles growing up for a more smoother ride. Our parents just made an improvised saddle made of sacks or old clothes, but really, the only thing that it did was to keep our clothes a bit cleaner especially if the carabao just had a bath in the mud. But it didn’t protect us from the bony parts of the carabao, it hurts a lot, but it was definitely fun, too.

And thanks for the information about ebay. Ebay here in Spain is not very famous as amazon and we don’t have craiglist.

Ooh, I have used ebay and craigslist with mixed success for lots of purchases (and sales) over the years. I hadn’t really considered all of the reasons that those channels would be a bad place to purchase a used circle y barrel saddle but right off of the bat, the lack of customer service could be a big issue. I’d say craigslist is definitely out for this purchase, but do you think that there are ebay sellers with enough positive reviews / feedback that this could be an option (with enough research into the seller)?

As someone who has loved horses since I was a child and owns a few of them, I have been trying to find a way to get quality equipment for my pets but again to make it worth my money. I have not come across The Horse Saddle Shop before, so found this to be a very helpful post on the best place to buy used saddles. I fully agree with you that eBay and Craigslist are not the places to buy a specialist product like a saddle. I have been avoiding Craigslist specifically as it seems to be filled with scammers. These saddles all look great, and it is good to know that The Hore Saddles Shop is a reputable outlet for used saddles.

Being my first of getting to know what a circle y barrel saddle is, I will say I have been able to know enough about what a circle y barrel saddle. Thanks for not only using this article has a review for eBay and Craigslist, but also as a source of knowledge about circle y barrel saddles and to recommend good sources for getting used circle y barrel saddles. Pertaining the saddle made with steel, will there be any harming effect to the horse or rider when using it? I would love to know as I have never ridden on a horse before.

  Hi Kelvin. Thanks for stopping by and commenting – great question. The saddles aren’t made of steel. Saddles are constructed from what are called “trees”. The trees are oftentimes made of wood but can be made of fiberglass or plastic. None of these harms the horse’s back.
  
  What harms the horse’s back is when someone purchases the wrong size saddle, meaning the tree doesn’t conform to the horse’s back, or if the tree is broken and is digging into the horse’s back, or they purchased the wrong type of saddle.

Thank you, this is a very handy tip for my uncle to buy a new horse saddle. Are used saddles has a large price difference with new saddle (similar to electronics?) Otherwise, I’m sure my uncle will prefer to buy a new one instead. Also, does the jockey’s weight affecting the saddle type (may need a stronger one)? Thanks for answering.

  Thanks for stopping by. Used saddles can sometimes still be very expensive, and so, depending on your budget, it sometimes just pays to buy a new saddle. As for the jockey’s weight affecting the saddle type – no. What determines the type of saddle you buy and its sturdiness is your riding discipline first. Once you’ve picked the saddle based on your discipline, you’ll need to discuss with your saddle maker what type of tree you’re looking for in a saddle. Treeless saddles tend to be lightweight. But due to technological advances, saddle makers are now able to make saddle trees that are light for any discipline. I hope this helps.

I think a used circle Y barrel saddle is a very specific or technical item. So, you shouldn’t buy it just from anyone on the street. And we all know that sellers on eBay and craigslist are common people like you and me.

So, it is better to check an online platform that specializes in the matter, as you so well advised.

I have never bought anything on eBay. While I believe it’s a great platform to advertise products, i have heard more negative reviews about eBay than good ones. EBay does not seem to have any restrictions either, which has led to several cases of animal cruelty. So, I am glad that you are sharing safer sites to purchase good saddles here.
The Buckstitch is very pretty and I love that it’s lightweight for the horse, I also like the Used Circle Y Martha Josey Ultimate Cash Barrel Saddle. It looks very pratical. I have not ridden horses in many years, but these saddles look great and very friendly to the horses. I can see that they are good quality.

I was looking at the weight of the saddles and could not help but wonder if jockeys that participates in horse racing events have completely different saddles than advertised here, specialised saddles that are very lightweight in comparison?

  Hi there. Thanks for stopping by. With respect to Western horse saddles and specifically this post, depending on the discipline, the horse saddles can be made lightweight. For instance, in barrel racing, which is a competitive event, the rider can opt for a treeless saddle, which would make the saddle lightweight – as opposed to a barrel saddle that was made with a wooden tree. What’s showcased in this post is 3 different models of saddles, and they don’t represent all barrel racing saddles. The treeless saddle is the lightest, weighing in at 21 pounds, as opposed to the other 2 weighing in at 26 and 27 pounds because of the wood needed for the tree.
  
  Also, with advanced technology, riders have the option of buying saddles that are lighter in weight in their respective disciplines. I hope that answers your question.
