These are some really great-looking saddles that you have here and in amazing condition. Your prices are really great and I am pleased that you can find buyers with the saddles that you have. I’m amazed at how much work goes into each saddle and I’ve lifted many of these saddles and they are hardy and heavy.

This is a great service that you are providing, thanks.

  • Keish says:

A few years ago, I volunteered in New Jersey and when visiting farms, I’d spend a little time with the horses. I love horses. I’ve ridden only once in my life and the saddle was very comfortable! That was ages ago.
I never knew horse saddles could be so expensive, but I can see all the quality that goes into one. Thank you for this post to let us know we have more affordable options if we want to pursue this sport.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Keish. Thanks for stopping by and giving feedback. Yes, saddles are expensive. I’m so glad that there are other options, other than buying new, when it comes to buying a saddle.  Why not take a look at The Horse Saddle Shop’s EZ Saddle Trade-in Program.  Please stop by again.

  • Haley says:

My dad used to ride horses until a few years ago when his passed away. I wish he still rode, I know he misses it. I LOVE the first saddle, it’s absolutely gorgeous. And you definitely have some good deals on these. It’s always best to look for higher quality for yourself and your horses’ sake.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Haley. Thanks for stopping by. I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. I agree. That first saddle, 14.5Inch Circle Y Honeysuckle Custom Show, is absolutely stunning! And it’s hard to believe they’re USED! We’ve got some great deals going on. So please feel free to stop by any time. Thanks again for commenting.

  • LineCowley says:

Hi there, horseback riding and keeping a horse is indeed a very expensive sport, so being able to find high end used saddles, can certainly save you quite a bit of money. The 14.5 inch Circle Y Honeysuckle custom show floor model, made with real silver, looks spectacular. I can just see how you can dazzle the judges when you use that saddle for showjumping.

A used saddle is also very comfortable, as the leather has already been broken in. My niece does show jumping, so I will share this post with her.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi there! Thanks for commenting. Yes, horseback riding requires disposable income. LOL. Used show saddles are a great investment. There’s plenty of bling to them, even when they’re used. The good news with my saddles, is that they’re thoroughly inspected, cleaned and oiled by The Horse Saddle Shop.

I hope you’ll stop by again!

  • MIchel says:

New saddles are really expensive so there is no reason not to look for a good second-hand one. As children we had horses and we only used second-hand saddles and never had any problems. You just need to look after the leather by regularly rubbing dubbin into it to keep it looking good. We had a saddle almost like the one in the picture at the top of your post, sort of cowboy style. I used to feel safer in that saddle as it had that point in front to grab onto if you felt you were losing your balance.

I don’t think my Dad would have gone as fancy as some of the saddles in this post as we just used them around the farm, but what would you say is the most important safety feature one should look out for on a second-hand saddle.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Michel. Thanks for your comment. If your budget is tight, it makes sense to buy a second hand saddle. I think when using a saddle for farm work, it’s not necessary to buy a new saddle at all. The biggest benefit would be that the saddle is already broken into.

As for your question, what is the most important safety feature one should look out for on a second-hand saddle, that really depends on what you’re buying the saddle for. Still, the most important thing to watch out for when buying a used saddle is to make sure the saddle tree isn’t cracked – even a little bit.

A cracked saddle, unbeknownst to you, can dig into the horse’s back hurting him badly. The weight distribution over the horse’s back will be unbalanced, causing more pain to the horse, and your ability to ride.  The good news with my saddles, is that they’re thoroughly inspected, cleaned and oiled by The Horse Saddle Shop.

  • Bill Wright says:

You know I am not a cowboy at all. The only riding I’ve done in my life was renting a horse at Loy Lake and I and a friend would go ride for the hour they offered for pennies, on the dollar.

AS a kid I would watch the cowboy pretty much protect their saddle more than their beloved horse and I can see why the saddle was probably more expensive than the horse that they had probably fell in love with like your dog.

I really didn’t know how much a saddle would run you back. And these were used saddles. I didn’t know a new saddle would cost these prices.

    Thank You,

    Bill Wright

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Bill. Thanks for your comment. Saddles are expensive. And it’s a real bargain to buy high-end used saddles. You don’t have to break it in for starters. And next, you can rest assured that the materials used are of the utmost quality. So glad you stopped by.

  • Vasile says:

It is a great benefit to get a third of the new price to use.
These second hand saddles are great offers if you don’t want a new one.
I have 2 grandchildren aged 3 and 9 respectively and I am thinking of initiating them on horseback in years to come, I had this chance but I did not make it fruitful, so I will follow what I started with this site and it is good for me.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Vasile. Thanks for your feedback. I agree with you 100% The benefits of owning a used saddle, especially a high-end used saddle, are tremendous. Definitely invest in your 2 grandchildren. They won’t outgrow their saddles anytime soon. Have a great day, and stop by again.

  • Eric Cantu says:

So if I’m getting any one of these as a gift, and I’m not quite sure about the horse it’s going to go on, what kind of questions should I ask before making my purchase or would these fit just about any full sized horse? Thank you!

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Eric. Thanks for your question. You would first have to ask the rider what type of riding they’ll be doing. See, all saddles aren’t made for the same thing. For instance, your friend may be a barrel racer. So if you buy her a cutting saddle, or a show saddle, that won’t be helpful to her or the horse as those saddles are made for the sport of cutting and showing.

So find out the type of riding she does. Then, you would need to have her give you her seat size. If she’s not sure of her seat size, you can always call the saddle shop you’re going to buy it from and ask them to help her determine her seat size.

  • Larry says:

As a former cowboy and horse trainer, I think the trail saddle would be my preference. I like the double rigging, stiff horn, medium cantle, and solid skirting. The others are nice, but I personally never did show or English riding. I do like the design of the Dale Chavez show saddle; it is nice and slick and looks comfortable to ride.

I prefer natural wood for a tree, but those seem to be less common now.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Larry. Thanks for your comment! I love when I get comments from experienced horseback riders. I agree with you. The Dale Chavez seems to be a favorite! I hope you visit us again. Have a great day.

  • Ceci says:

Thanks for this comparative review of these beautiful used high end saddles. I fell in love with the 15.5Inch Used Tucker Horizon Outpost Endurance Saddle with its distinctive, rich, two-tone color. The only issue was the size – 15.5 inch. With a used saddle, you might not find your size in the model you like! I think used saddles are infinitely more comfortable because the leather has already been broken into (like new leather shoes).

Shopping for used saddles means that you must constantly keep checking until you are able to find one that suits your size and taste, but I can already see that the cost will negate that minor inconvenience to make it worthwhile.

    Ceci

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Ceci. You’re partially right. You may not be able to find your size immediately. But with a reputable online horse saddle shop, such as The Horse Saddle Shop, there are 100s, if not 1,000s of saddles being traded in on a regular basis to their shop. So, I’d say your odds are high. Also, you can either chat online or call and speak to someone live who will help you find the right saddle size and type for you. Give it a try. What type of riding do you do?

  • These are very beautiful saddles I cannot believe they are used. I learned a lot from your other post but because I got rejected I wanted to go the extra mile and support your site with the link you provided in the rejection. I can definitely see the difference in the quality of saddle

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Rev! Thank you so much for your comment. Thanks for making the extra effort. I so appreciate it. Yes, these saddles are so gorgeous. I too can’t believe they’re used. But that just goes to show that when used saddles come in, they are thoroughly cleaned, oiled and inspected. No used saddle will be sold if it’s inferior quality. Also, you get a 2-week money-back guaranteed. Please stop by again.

  • John Stanley says:

    Thanks Shalisha,
You have explained clearly the benefits here – you can get a ten-figure saddle for a fraction of the cost. I would look seriously into these quality second hand options before buying new. I showed the post to my daughter and she may be interested in horse riding, so this is where we’ll come for shopping in a few years time if she get’s serious about horse riding. She is only 5 now.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi John. Thanks for your comment. Yes, there are so many benefits to buying a used western saddle – whether it be a used high-end saddle, or just a used saddle. When you purchase from my site, which I am affiliated with The Horse Saddle Shop, you are guaranteed that the saddle will be cleaned, thoroughly, inspected and oiled. The horse saddle shop also has a trade-in program and financing. There are so many ways to afford a new or used saddle. I can’t wait for your daughter to start riding.

  • Markus says:

    Hi Shalisha!

Thank you for your review! My daughter has been riding a horse for over a year now. We are planning to get her new saddle for her rent horse as things are getting serious with her hobby. Your post gave me a better idea between good quality saddle and the second best option… I think I will save some more money and get her a better option. I think it’s worth it. Cheers!

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Markus. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Yes, definitely invest in a high-quality saddle, be it used or new. But if you’re going to invest in a used saddle, make sure you buy it from a reputable company – one that guarantees you money back. The Horse Saddle Shop offers high-end used and new saddles. They also sell used saddles with a price range of $650-$1,500 if that’s all you can afford. You can also take advantage of their Trade-in program. Bring them your old saddle, and trade it in for one of their used or new saddles. 2-week money-back guaranteed. And they have free shipping too. Please stop by again.
