I had a saddle for my horse growing up which looked remarkably similar to the one pictured here. I had no idea it was specifically designed for barrel racing but I must admit I loved the high piece in front as it gave me something to hold on to when I was learning to ride and when the horse took off unexpectedly. Are barrel racers allowed to hold onto this piece during a competition?
Hi Michel. Thanks for your comment and your question. I’m not sure if what you had growing up was a barrel saddle. However, some barrel saddles can be used for every day riding. But barrel saddles are really made for the sport of barrel racing.
Yes. Barrel racers not only are allowed to hold onto the horn during competition, they have to. Use of the horn helps the rider avoid balancing off onto the horses mouth! And staying on the horn for at least two strides away from the barrel allows the horse to build speed. It also gives the rider a chance to stay balanced while reaching for the outside rein. I hope this helps. Please stop by again. Have a great day.
As someone who has been involved in barrel racing for several years, I can vouch for the importance of having the right saddle. It’s not just about speed, but also about the control and comfort that the saddle provides during those tight turns. I’ve had the opportunity to try out Josey Barrel racing saddles, and I must say that the innovative design truly makes a difference. The deep seat and forward-cut swell have significantly improved my stability and confidence when navigating the barrels. Additionally, the lightweight construction and shorter skirt length have enhanced my ability to communicate effectively with my horse, resulting in smoother maneuvers. The support and shock absorption offered by these saddles have helped me stay focused on the race without worrying about discomfort or jolts. Overall, I believe that the quality and design of a saddle play a crucial role in achieving success in barrel racing, and Josey Barrel saddles have certainly proven their worth in my experience.
