So you can choose from a large variety of used western saddles.

Before you can choose which type of saddle you’ll need, you’ll need to know what kind of riding discipline you’ll be in engaged in.

Now, having said that, what are some of the things you should you look for before buying a used saddle?

What to Look For in a Used Western Saddle

Buying From a Reputable Saddle Company

It’s normal to want to buy a used saddle on Craigslist, as that is probably the cheapest place to buy one. However, there are pitfalls to buying a used horse saddle on Craigslist.

Avoid Craigslist and Ebay like the plague!

First, if you’re new to horseback riding, you may not know what to look for in a saddle.  Second, you won’t know how to check the tree saddle to see if it’s cracked or broken.

Third, you won’t know if you’re really getting a bargain unless you do extensive research.

Fourth, you won’t get a money back guarantee if you buy it on Craigslist. In fact, you won’t get your money back at all.

Lastly, it’s super easy to get scammed on Craigslist. So, I’d completely stay away from buying a saddle on Craigslist.

Clean, Inspected, and Ready to Ride

If you don’t know anything about saddles, which many riders don’t, who’s going to inspect it? How will you know if it’s ready to ride? How do you know if it will be a good fit for you and your horse?

You won’t.

However, I did write a post with a 2-minute video on how to check to see if a saddle is a good fit. You might want to go check it out.

But in case you don’t feel like leaving this page, here’s the video.

Still, who has time to do research? You want to just go in, buy the saddle, and have confidence that you made the right choice, right?

I highly recommend buying a used saddle from a reputable company either online or in person. So, what are the benefits of buying a used saddle?

  1. I really like the idea of buying a used western saddle. Being a single mom, and on a budget, this seems like a super choice for me. I also like that I can buy from a company and know that it will still be as quality as buying a new one…yet ready to go and broken in. Are there any downsides at all to buying a used saddle?

    • Hi Matts Mom. Thanks for commenting. I can’t see any downside to buying a used saddle at all so long as you buy from a dealer.

  2. Your article was very informative! I am not a fan of purchasing anything off of craigslist because it is very hard to trust the seller. I have been scammed before.

I did love your video! It was nice to know about the 3 finger rule, as I do not want the saddle to roll as I have seen that happen in the past!

When purchasing from the Horse Saddle Shop, what is your favorite brand of Western Saddles?

    • Hi Delanee! Thanks for your comment. Yes, Craigslist has started to become the place for scam artists to “sell” their wares. I stay clear of it. As far as my favorite saddle brand? I’d say Big Horn because they use the highest quality materials and their saddles are handmade.

  3. What a GREAT idea. There’s plenty of used saddles for sale, but for some reason, I always thought they were “worn out”, rather than “broken in”.

My wife rides English and could tell you all about the different English saddles and what they’re used for – dressage, etc. But I’ve always rode Western and thought for years a “saddle is a saddle”. I never knew or gave it much thought that there’s saddles for different types of work – roping, ranging, trail, etc.

    Honestly a fascinating article here.

    • Hi Dave! Isn’t that amazing? As a Western rider and didn’t know the need for different types of saddles for different riding disciplines. I’m sure there are lots more people who don’t know either, so the end up buying the wrong type saddle and the poor horse…I’m so glad my article was helpful to you.

  4. What an important topic! It’s great that you can get a used saddle that’s been inspected by a professional. It makes me shudder to think of the accidents possible if someone tried to use a saddle that was broken or shoddily made!

    • Hi Khiori! Thanks for your comment. Yes, and imagine the pain to the horse’s back when they have a broken saddle tree with nails digging in its back? So painful. I’m glad you found my article helpful.

  5. Hello,

I love that you shared this post, from someone on a budget this type of advice is very helpful!

My instinct would be to go straight to Craigslist for anything used, I often see saddles on Kijiji or Craigslist and wonder if they are worth purchasing. I was unaware that there was a used horse saddle shop!

    Thank you for this post

    • Hi Brianne. Yes, used saddles are for people on a budget or people who are new to riding and are not yet ready to plunk down a huge amount of cash just yet. I’m actually going to be writing articles on the different types of used Western saddles. Again, thanks for your comment.
