Arabian Western Saddles Sale – Got a Hard to Fit Horse?

The Impossible Mission: Navigating the Arabian Western Saddles Sale

Excited about an Arabian Western saddles sale?

What’s the most difficult breed to fit for a western saddle? If you answered with a resounding “Arabian!”, odds are you’ve already been down the rabbit hole of digging through the Arabian Western Saddles Sale world and experienced it for yourself.

Why are Arabians so hard to fit for western saddles?

When it comes to Arabian horses, it’s tough to find a saddle that fits. Because of this, when you see the headline of an Arabian Western Saddles Sale, you tend to get excited.

Arabians tend to have shorter backs and need wider gullets than other breeds. Because of this, not every saddle will fit them.

If you ever study an Arabian horse’s back, you’ll notice that not only are their backs shorter but they have a distinct downward slope of the back that goes into the withers.

This means that unless they have a saddle that fits properly, it’s going to move all over the place. And it all comes down to having the right measurements for both horse and rider.

How do I find those measurements?

Before you go running to buy that eye-catching saddle from the Arabian Western Saddles Sale, you’ll need to figure out the measurements on you and your horse to ensure a perfect fit.

Western saddles were made for cowboys and the tough life out west. Because of this, it’s not surprising they’re made for durability and stability.

To measure the seat, just take whatever size you need in an English saddle and take about two inches away.

Go sit on a western saddle, and you’ll notice the difference right away. You should sit pretty easily behind the cantle, with about a hand’s length between both the cantle and the swell from your seat.

To measure for the skirt, start a few inches behind your horse’s shoulder blade to the hip. A saddle skirt should rest just above the hip and not go past it.

The easiest way to measure the gullet is to bend a clothes hanger around your horse’s withers. Grab a ruler and measure the width at the widest part.

That’s what gullet size you need.

It’s also good to look at the cantle height. Depending on what kind of riding you’ll be doing, the cantle can make or break your ride. If you need more back support and stability, get something with a higher cantle.

If mobility is important to you, get a lower cantle height.

  • Finish: Black or brown
  • Seat: 15.5″ or 16.5″ grain out, padded

Synthetic leather has also been popular with endurance riders for years due to its hardiness, ease of care, and light weight. Another benefit is riders tend to stick to the seat a little better as it’s more like a suede feeling than the smoothness of leather.

The shorter, rounder skirt is made for Arabian horses, and it features a design that takes the funky Arabian withers into consideration. Sound like a match made in horse heaven? Shop the Arabian Western Saddles Sale now!

Thanks for sharing this post. As always, I found a lot of great information on your website. I like how you have explained how to properly measure Arabian for a saddle and then gave a few recommendations as well. I’m sure others will find this post as useful as I have. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Hi Ivan. Thanks. I’m so glad you found this post helpful. Please come again.

I didn’t know that there was such a difference between Arabian horses and other horses. A lot of thought and consideration goes into finding the right saddle. I had no idea that the back of a Arabian is slightly different, so I think it’s wonderful that so much consideration goes into the making of the right saddle for the horse and rider. My favorite saddle by far is the South Bend Saddle Co Arabian Trail Saddle.
And those Arabian horses are so beautiful! I love all horses actually. Have you seen the Brabant horses from Belgium with their thick hoofs? They’re gorgeous! I’m not sure if they’re used for riding, but they look stunning too.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Christine. Thanks for your comment. Arabians are so beautiful. The Arabian is a versatile breed. Arabians dominate the discipline of endurance riding, and compete today in many other fields of equestrian sport. They are one of the top ten most popular horse breeds in the world.

As for the Brabant horses from Belgium, they are one of the strongest of the heavy breeds. Belgians are used as working animals, but have also become popular as show horses, and pleasure riding horses.

    Hi Shalisha,

I was browsing through the saddles that are for sale. I really like the looks of a synthetic one but have always had leather. I have a few questions about synthetics.

    1. Are there any pros or cons with a synthetic for the horse?

    2. I put a lot of work in conditioning and treating my leather saddles, do synthetics require less upkeep?

    3. I have had the same leather saddles for many years. Do synthetic saddles last as long?

You have some nice choices here. I know they are geared toward the Arabians but I have an older quarter horse that is particular in size and found these fit her well.

    Thanks,

    Chad

Hi. Thanks for your questions. Synthetic saddles are low maintenance. However, good quality leather is more durable than synthetic. A good quality leather saddle will last a lifetime with the proper care. Good leather tack is an investment, which will hold its value better if you decide to resell it. Buying used is an affordable way to buy good quality leather saddles.

This was such a helpful article on Arabian Western saddles. I owned a very beautiful Arab for years but as I did dressage I always rode in dressage or English saddle. I’m amazed that these western saddles exist for Arabs but it really makes sense as these saddles are so comfortable and offer far more stability for the rider. I’m so pleased that you explained about the shorter back and angle down to the withers, I didn’t know that. Although, once you had pointed it out and could see it perfectly.

You have some really lovely saddles displayed here and at very reasonable prices. Happy riding.

    • Shalisha Alston says:

Hi Lily. Thanks for your comment. Arabs are such beautiful horses! I’m glad you knew that you needed a different saddle type for your discipline. So many people don’t know that – which ends up hurting the horse. I’m glad you like the saddles on display.  They are reasonably priced. Also, you get a money-back guaranteed.  Another alternative is to buy a used saddle.  The Horse Saddle Shop has a trade-in program, which is helpful for people on a budget. Thanks for stopping by.
